Getting Started

Status: 🟢 Active  |  Owner: Architecture Team  |  Last Reviewed: 2025-Q4

Introduction

This section is the entry point for everyone who interacts with the Engineering Standards Portal — whether you are reading it for the first time as a new joiner, returning to check a specific standard, or contributing an update as a guild lead.

The Getting Started section serves three distinct audiences:

New Engineers need to understand what the portal is, why it exists, how it is organised, and what is expected of them. It should be the first place they visit after completing their environment setup, and the place they return to when they have a question about how engineering works at this organisation.

Tech Leads and Architects need to understand how standards are owned, how to propose changes, how to handle exceptions, and what their responsibilities are in upholding and evolving the standards for their teams and domains.

Contributors — engineers of all levels who have identified a gap, an error, or an improvement — need a clear, low-friction path to propose changes, understand the review process, and see their contributions tracked and attributed.

Intent

The intent of this section is to ensure that navigating, consuming, and contributing to standards is as low-friction as possible. A portal that is hard to navigate or difficult to contribute to will be ignored. One that is well-organised, clearly owned, and easy to update becomes a living asset that the engineering organisation actively maintains and trusts.

The governance model documented here is deliberately lightweight. It is designed to balance two competing forces: the need for quality control and deliberate decision-making on one hand, and the need for speed and low bureaucratic overhead on the other. Standards that take months to update become stale and lose credibility. Standards that can be changed by anyone at any time lose authority.
